Postcards from Hampi – A weekend trip from Bangalore

It’s been a week since we got back from Hampi but the memories are still fresh. It was a long weekend and roads to Hampi looked pretty fine for a road trip, so we packed our bags and left during the wee hours for a weekend trip from Bangalore. It took us around 7-8 hours to reach Hampi but it was a smooth highway ride until Chitradurga from where the road was single lane and got a little bumpy.

We reached Hospet by late afternoon and after an extensive search (as everything was already booked, Argh!) finally found a hotel. Hampi is only a 13 kms ride from Hospet and a beautiful one indeed. We spent rest of the day relaxing in our comfortable bed and chilling. Well, don’t you just agree that any vacation is incomplete without being a couch potato and ordering food in? Oh and the joy of finding local eateries and small tuck shops is another reason why I love to travel so much.

For next day our agenda was to explore Hampi and find out what it holds within it that attracts a lot of global travellers (something that I read online while going through experiences shared by various tourists). The weather was pleasant during our entire stay and it even rained a few times resulting in gorgeous clear skies. We decided to rent an auto rickshaw for about 6 hours and he took us to all the famous touristy places. It was a good deal as we could cover almost everything in a day and got some time to ourselves the next day. The only issue we faced was the unavailability of food outlets in the area and not knowing the location of hidden quaint cafes mentioned online. Although there were a plenty of locals selling fruits and snacks but we couldn’t find any food options around except for Mango tree restaurant near Virupaksha temple. The moment we reached there, we knew we had hit the jackpot and the food made it even better. I strongly suggest checking out this laid back place if you plan on visiting Hampi. It was late in the evening when we got done after stuffing ourselves at Mango tree, so we decided to take a walk till the riverside. But it was dark by then and we couldn’t see anything, so we took a detour and got back to our car to leave for the hotel. An interesting card game and some more TV was how we ended our eventful day.

The next day we went back for a few hours in the morning to capture the beautiful day light and trust me that was the best time we spent in Hampi. There were not any people around and the air had that lazy vibe to it unlike the busy city life. There was a deep connection with nature and a strong sense of peace in the air that I left a part of my heart there. Resuming the regular life was not easy but we came back with some wonderful memories and a series of photos that we managed to capture.
